The bolshevik revolution
In October of 1917, amidst the fighting of World War I, Vladimir Ilyich Lenin and the Bolshevik Party overthrew the Provisional Government and granted the proletariat their right to rule Russia. However, this event launched the country into a civil war, and the government that emerged was not the one the people had envisioned. The Communist government neglected its responsibility to grant the workers their rights, and effectively became a dictatorship, the Soviet Union. As the first communist state, the Soviet Union encouraged the global growth of communism and affected the political and geographical structure of Europe by involving itself in the many conflicts of the century, such as World War II and the Cold War.
